My head hurts LOL

by simplysoap

Oh My God l am so confused.
I started reading the first week of my photography course last night, and already l am feeling waaaaay out of my depth. It was 75-ish pages of quite interesting reading, and l knew some of the things covered already, so l was feeling just a tiny bit smug and knowledgeable. Except then l got to the first assessment task, and it didn’t make ANY sense to me whatsoever. I couldn’t understand how the questions asked related to what l had just read. There was a bit of frantic scrolling back and forward as l tried to work out whether l had skipped half the pages or something, but nope, l hadn’t.

The assessment task gives you 10 different photographic scenarios and a list of fixed focal length lenses and other photographic equipment that you are allowed to choose from. I only figured out what a fixed focal length lens is and why you would want to use one a few weeks ago. Now there are about 8 different ones to choose from LOL. You have to explain which equipment and lens you would use for each scenario and be able to explain WHY you chose them.

OMG. Google to the rescue LOL. I went to bed with my head full of f-stops and apertures and depth of field and chromatic abberation. Followed by pincushion distortion and low light shooting. My nightly chat session with John before falling asleep was about the pros and cons of a full frame camera versus a smaller frame camera. And how THAT choice affects your lens selection. I thought choosing and buying a new camera was going to be a simple decision, but that’s not going to be the case. I’m not even sure now that l need one, l think the lenses are more important.

But first l have to figure out this assignment. I haven’t submitted work for assessment for over 16 years and truthfully, l am a bit scared.

  1. Gabbie,

Just got a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm lenses for my birthday over a month ago. I had never used a DSLR so I still have so much to learn. I still have my Nikon L11 digital camera. Sounds like you are learning so much already. How exciting.
