Colour

Remember a while back l talked about giving up Fragrance Oils in my soaps? I haven’t regretted it (that may be because l haven’t made much soap since then!) but, l have noticed a few comments here and there congratulating me on the more ‘natural’ approach l was going to take to soapmaking, and asking what l was going to use to colour my soap.
And l hadn’t even considered that with a move towards using more essential oils, it is often expected that there will also be a move away from the more ‘non-natural’ colours. Except there is just no way l could do it. I love my bottles of soap colour, so, so much. Some of them can still be classed as being natural – the micas, ultramarines, oxides etc – but it can be safely assumed that the neon lime green that l used to colour Avocado & Lime soap last night is totally NOT natural *g*
And really…for now, l’m okay with that. Soap for me at the moment is all about heading in a general direction that l am happy with, and if colour makes me happy, then that’s okay. Not every soap is coloured loudly, they are all different. Some have artificial glitter on top. I’m not going to tie myself in knots by becoming a purist, goodness knows I have enough other things to tie myself in knots over without adding to the pile!

Go colour go! I was using a brightly coloured orange citrussy soap of yours last night and it was all that I could do not to lick it, imagining a delicious sweet taste. I knew that wouldn’t be the reality though so luckily stopped short of stupidity. Soap how you want to – it’s gorgeous!
As a fellow soapmaker, I applaud you for following your heart. I completely understand why it’s hard to let the colors go, even if they do contain a bit of synthetics.
I love, love, love your colors. I live vicariously through them. I wish I would allow myself to do color sometimes, but philosophically for me it just isn’t right.I so appreciate gorgeous color done well. As someone already said”I applaud you for following your heart” that’s perhaps the most important aspect of soap making.Enjoy your colors!
Please don’t give up the lovely bright colours. That’s the main reason I’m coming here
Lets face it … beige can get a bit boring after a while. I can vouch for that because when we moved into this house 18 years ago we painted every room the same shade of beige .. ArrrrggggHHHHHHHH
It’s taken years but we now have a loungeroom with a daffodil yellow feature wall. The dining area a light blue/mauve one of the toilets has just been painted in a very light green with a teal feature wall at the back. We are sick of beige …. get the drift kiddo?
This is funny, I’m only into botanical colorants, but am having trouble phasing out all of my fragrance oils. However, I’m having some good success with botanical colorants and for green, liquid chlorophyll from Super Supplements has worked well, as well as parsley powder.
This is really interesting. My natural soaps are very plain, but I love colour too and so I am having fun making soaps with my soap dyes. I think you have to follow your heart and make the soap YOU want to make. Your Avocado soap looks amazing xx
Love the new soap, it’s so pretty and spring looking. How did you get rid of all your FO’s or did you not have a lot. I’m trying to spend this year going through all of mine and then decide if I’ll keep a few favourites or not. I too love colour in soap.
Michelle, l put all the FO’s on ebay in one big bulk lot – they were bought by another soapmaker who loves melt and pour, she was thrilled and it was a lovely coincidence LOL!
Ive been going through this myself lately. I started out soaping all natural and then just for the customers sake started doing bright colors, then got hooked on the different FO`s out there, and now I represent an FO supplier!
Funny thing is, all my new soaps..the ones im curing now..are all heading back to my natural roots! And ive never been happier, but I dont think i can let go of all my favorite colors either!
